Oil Spill Volunteering – This course is designed to prepare potential oil spill volunteers in what to expect at an accidental uncontrolled release of oil into the environment.  Legal and managerial/organizational aspects of the class are specific to the US environment, but may also be useful in organizing non-US spills.

Course Goals:

•Introduce the US governmental and non-governmental agencies involved

•Introduce Incident Command System (ICS)

•Discuss health and safety issues

•Discuss species involved and handling procedures

•Discuss stabilization and care information

•Help you decide if working with oiled wildlife is for you

Pain Management – The Pain Management course is designed to give wildlife care professionals a working knowledge of the vocabulary and concepts underlying the modern approach to pain management in mammalian and avian species.

Parasitology – All animals have parasites. Understanding them leads to better care of wildlife in rehabilitation and can reduce the spread of disease. Parasitology is a comprehensive course covering individual parasites, their life cycles, and their transmission to new hosts. In this course you begin to learn how to identify the diagnostic forms, the treatments to use and also the zoonotic potential for many varieties of parasites.

Wound ManagementDeveloped specifically for wildlife care professionals, Wound Management provides a systematic review of the physiology and treatment of the most common types of soft-tissue wounds seen in injured mammalian and avian species. Topics include wound assessment, wound types, antibiotic therapy, cleaning and topical agents, bandaging techniques and the physiology and stages of wound healing. Fractures and wound management in herpetiles are not covered in this course.

I would like to know if the parasitology course is going to be offered on-line. I am a bit worried because I have done all your courses except parasitology and I need another 4 points to keep my CWR qualification which expires in September 2010. There are no courses in South Africa and my only chance for continuing education is through the IWRC.

    Thanks,

    Gail

    Hi Dean,

At this time we do not offer that class online. You can see a list of current locations under “Physical Classes”. We do have plans to put the lecture portion online. However, the lab portion would remain for physical locations only.

    Sincerely

    Kai

    HI there.
I was just wondering if you have the dates for future classroom classes. I know there is one in victoria April 9 and 10 on Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation, but I will be unable to attend that one. I am from Calgary so that will be the closest location.
    Thanks
    Jolandi

Hi Michelle and other interested Vancouver,CA residents,

If you missed the registration for our course in Victoria this spring, there will be another opportunity to take the Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation course in Vancouver this coming fall. We are working with UBC to hold this course. As soon as the details are finalized we will have it on the website.

    Hi Jolandi,
Thanks for your interest. For those of you hoping to take a class in Canada, but couldn’t make out Victoria or Saskatoon classes this spring, we are planning a course for Vancouver, BC, CA this fall. We’d love to host a course in Alberta as well. If you know of a University program or center that may be interested in hosting, let me know.

    HI Kim.
I was wondering if you could give me some info on internship. ( or could you tell me where to find info on your website) If that is a requirement after the class and if so, how long should a internship be. I was hoping to do the internship in South-Africa. Would that be possible?

    Hi Linda,

It’s likely we won’t offer the Basic course online anytime in the near future because of the on-site class component. However, we will likely have another course this coming spring in Murray, KY if you are interested in attending.

    Hi Sarah,

We don’t have the debut date set but I’m hoping it will be up by early summer (ideally in late spring!). It all depends on how fast the peer reviewers are (and that there are no technical issues in recording it).

    Cheers

    Kai
