With such a broad network it is not always possible to get a wildlife casualty to RWCA headquarters for immediate aid. With help from donors like you we will provide our Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation course, resources, and a supply kit to each community volunteer. These invaluable tools will empower the community volunteers to examine and stabilize wildlife, giving animals a better chance at a positive outcome.
In 2021 IWRC began working with the Rwanda Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (RWCA) to bring our wildlife courses and supplies to their network of volunteers. RWCA is a registered non-governmental organization in Rwanda founded in 2015 by Dr. Olivier Nsengimana, a wildlife veterinarian and conservationist, who has won numerous awards for his work. Run by Rwandans who come from and understand local communities and their challenges, RWCA aims to create sustainable solutions to critical conservation issues by using a multidisciplinary, holistic approach. RWCA’s main program works to reverse the declining trend of the endangered Grey Crowned Cranes (Balearica regulorum) in Rwanda, with a focus on stopping illegal trade. RWCA has expanded its activities to protect and conserve other threatened and endangered species in Rwanda including Straw-colored fruit bats (Eidolon helvum), Sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii) and African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus).
Supply kits include:
- Oral rehydration/nutrition supplies (syringes, red rubber tubes for gavage, Emeraid Critical Care Omnivore)
- Bandage/Splint supplies (Cling bandage, gauze, cast padding, tape)
- Personal protective equipment for volunteers (gloves, goggles, masks)
- And more!
