POSITION DESCRIPTION

Wildlife Center of Long Island (Volunteers for Wildlife), founded in 1982, is a growing regional wildlife rehabilitation and educational non-profit. We are seeking an experienced, financially astute non-profit leader, fundraiser, marketer and communicator as its Executive Director. The organization’s mission is the preservation of Long Island’s wildlife and natural habitats through two modes: wildlife rehabilitation and education. We are seeking an Executive Director who is interested in an opportunity to have significant and long term impact on Long Island’s wildlife and ecosystems. This is an opportunity to work closely with the Board of Directors, the Director of Rehab/Operations, the Director of Rehab/Administration and the Education Coordinator to continue the organization’s reputation as a preeminent voice for Long Island’s wildlife. This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about wildlife and education, is self-motivated, has excellent communication skills, leadership capabilities, problem-solving talents and is looking for an opportunity to have impact in a key role. This position reports to the President of the Board of Directors and is responsible for the Wildlife Center’s overall organizational leadership and operations.

Responsibilities will include
• Working with the Board to develop and implement strategic initiatives; implement Board policies, goals, priorities and objectives
• Developing revenue through existing and new fundraising sources and programs
• Planning and overseeing major fundraising events including soliciting sponsors and donors, working with vendors, marketing the events, and supervising ticket sales
• Leading our marketing and communication efforts as the chief spokesperson. Cultivating strong and supportive relationships with other institutions in region and community. Interface with newspapers and news outlets
• Being responsible for the overall management of the organization, including:
o Financials
o Database and donor records
o Staffing

Qualifications:

A strong candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:

• 5 years leadership experience - Fundraising/Development and/or Business Management
• Measurable and successful results in fundraising and in identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual, foundation and government donors
• Familiar with grant writing
• Excellent communications skills (written and verbal), with the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small and large group situations
• A detailed understanding of operations and financial management
• An understanding of capital projects and facilities management
• Ability to maintain focus in a busy shared office environment and flexibility to work remotely as needed
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Passionate interest in the field of wildlife education, rehabilitation and conservation
