Cascades Raptor Center is looking for a motivated, team-oriented professional to join our Raptor Rehabilitation Program. Under the supervision of our staff veterinarian, the Animal Rehabilitation Assistant will assist in all aspects of the wildlife hospital – caring for injured, orphaned, and sick raptors.
The ideal candidate will display basic knowledge of native raptor species and their habitat, superior interpersonal and communication skills, experience managing volunteers, be a strong team player, and strong organizational skills for coordinating multiple functions and planning.
This position is part-time, hourly.

Animal Rehabilitation Assistant
The task of the rehabilitation assistant is to assist the veterinarian in all aspects of the rehabilitation program at the Center.
Assisting during the daily clinic hours and treatment rounds as required, which may include triage and stabilization of patients upon arrival at the Center
Training and directing shift volunteers in rehabilitation-related tasks when appropriate
Preparing food for the rehabilitation birds
Drug calculation, dispensing, and application
Conducting treatment under the supervision or as directed by the veterinarian
Making sure the treatment board is updated
Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and organization concerning
- food preparation area
- treatment room and wards, including instruments
- all clinic and rehabilitation equipment (including crates)
- rehabilitation aviaries – which may include design and installation of perches for patients
- the “dirty” sink
Inventory and restocking supplies for bird care; unpacking, cataloguing and storing arriving drug and medical supplies
Entering rehabilitation data in the computer
Assisting with off-site rehabilitation work as required:
- Surveys for raptor nest and possibilities of renesting
- Post-renesting monitoring of nestlings
Answering bird emergency calls, assessing raptor emergency situations, and obtaining appropriate transport for injured raptors
Monitoring cadaver freezer
Assisting with laboratory diagnostics
Assisting with x-ray procedures
Other duties as required
The rehabilitation assistant works directly under the veterinarian and reports to the veterinarian. In absence of the veterinarian s/he/they reports to the Bird Curator.
The working hours are 30 hours per week at $14/hr with health insurance. Morning, evening and weekend hours required. Due to the nature of the work, some flexibility in the hours would be required with some days of split shifts.
A bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, veterinary medicine or a related field or training as a veterinary technician is preferred
