The hospital: Fellow Mortals is a dedicated professional wildlife hospital established in 1985; our internship program commenced in 1992. All care is provided on site. The facility consists of 10,000 square feet of hospital and clinic space, with additional pool habitats, outdoor caging, and some of the largest raptor flights in the nation. All care is provided by licensed wildlife rehabilitators working in partnership with veterinarians. Fellow Mortals is open and busy year-round caring for injured and orphaned wildlife. Approximately 2000 wild birds and non-predatory animals receive care annually. In addition to human caregivers, Fellow Mortals’ wildlife rehabilitation relies heavily on the assistance of permanent wild fosters. We helped to pioneer the use of non-releasable wild birds as conspecific fosters and they have been an important part of our program since 1989.
Our philosophy: Fellow Mortals is based on the belief that individual life is important. The staff shares that belief and works the hours necessary to provide what is needed to give the best care possible. All animal care staff are licensed wildlife rehabilitators; three came to Fellow Mortals as interns (2003, 2005, 2012) and were subsequently offered permanent positions.
Description of Position: This internship is intended for recent college graduates looking for experience in the field of wildlife rehabilitation. Interns work alongside staff five days a week with two non-consecutive days off. Interns must be able to work any day of the week, though schedules are generally set once the internship is established. Hours vary but are guaranteed to be 12 hours or more a day during the busiest months of the internship.
Interns provide wildlife care under the supervision of staff, including feeding and care of wildlife, cleaning enclosures and habitats, structure maintenance, record keeping, interacting with the public, transport and release of wildlife, and other necessary tasks. Graduate interns will experience care of injured adult animals as well as orphaned wildlife care, and will also have the opportunity to learn about the many facets of running a hospital and an organization.
Training Opportunity: Interns are provided with tools to help them succeed in the tasks assigned, including daily schedules, written protocols, and supervision by and access to staff, while being provided with learning modules that build knowledge and augment hands-on experience, including sections on natural history, disease, handling techniques, release criteria, conspecific fostering, etc.
Benefits: Interns receive a $500 per month stipend, prorated by start and end dates. In addition to the stipend, accepted interns are provided $100 toward scrub tops and pants. During the internship, interns have the ability to earn gift cards and receive spontaneous other benefits. It is our desire that interns coming to Fellow Mortals enjoy their experience in every way, and many of our former interns continue to be part of the Fellow Mortals’ family through volunteering or donating.
Excellence Bonus: Exceptional interns have the opportunity to earn a bonus of $100 for each month of the internship. Any performance bonus earned during internship is paid as a condition of completion of the agreed-upon internship period. Details provided after acceptance into the program.
Housing: Interns with a commute of 60 minutes or more may apply for housing in the intern dorm at a cost of $300 per month. Dorm Housing is located 15 minutes from the hospital and includes same-sex shared sleeping area and separate kitchen, dining and bathroom. A full or partial offset to the housing cost is available for interns in exchange for helping with laundry at the intern location. If housing is requested and granted, the applicant is required to live in the housing. If interested in housing and/or an offset, include your requests in your cover letter.
Qualifications: Recent college student with documented interest in wildlife conservation, animal behavior, or the environment. Students majoring outside a wildlife field with a compelling cover letter will be considered.
Physical Fitness: Interns must be physically capable and without any issues that will prevent or cause a problem performing in the internship. While our hospital and habitats are environmentally controlled, this is still a very physical position and some of the tasks assigned to interns occur outside of the hospital. Interns must be capable of: standing or walking for long periods of time (we can put on 20,000 steps in a day), lifting and moving feed bags (50#), kneeling, bending, squatting, sitting, using a pressure washer or washer spray nozzle for minutes at time, daily tasks that include sweeping, mopping, using arms, wrists, hands and fingers in repetitive motions, performing outdoor tasks in hot, humid, windy, rainy or cold weather, or when there are insects present.
Emotional Fitness: Qualified applicants will have a compassionate, calm and friendly demeanor; be able to communicate without becoming confrontational, receive and respond to direction and correction in a mature manner; be able to follow directions with minimal supervision; and engage appropriately with staff and others they may meet during the internship. Interns must speak and write English and be capable of comprehending oral and written instruction. Interns who exhibit enthusiasm and interest for learning will benefit and achieve the most from this opportunity.
Requirements: Reference from paid work experience in a non-familial position (school-related is fine), Doctor’s release (see physical fitness above), private health insurance, current tetanus vaccination, valid driver’s license and private transportation. All interns are required to be able to perform all duties of the internship.
