Description

Developed specifically for wildlife care professionals, Wound Management provides a systematic review of the physiology and treatment of the most common types of soft-tissue wounds seen in injured mammalian and avian species.

Course lecture topics include:

  • Wound assessment
  • Wound types
  • Antibiotic therapy
  • Cleaning and topical agents
  • Bandaging techniques
  • Physiology and stages of wound healing

Lab topics include:

  • Wound preparation
  • Nonadhesive and wet to dry wound management
  • Fracture bandaging with Robert Jones, figure 8, modified figure 8 ‘Miller wing sling’, and wing to body wrap

Fractures and wound management in herptiles are not covered in this course.

 

To receive a course completion certificate, students must successfully pass the online Wound Management exam with s score 70% or higher within 1 year of registration in the Moodle classroom.

 

Pre-Requisites: Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation strongly encouraged

Required Materials:

  • Internet access
  • Ability to record and upload videos (upload tool provided)
  • Textbook – Wildlife Rehabilitation: A Comprehensive Approach
  • Basic bandaging supplies OR purchase of IWRC kit
  • Legal access to an avian and mammal cadaver for lab OR purchase of IWRC kit

Optional Materials*:

  • Nitrile gloves in your size
  • Bandage scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Sterile water-based gel
  • Chlorhexidine or povidone iodine (surgical disinfectant)
  • Sterile fluids

*While you can complete your lab without these tools we recommend having them on hand to simulate the actual procedures as closely as possible

    Great lectures and very informative. There could be a couple tweaks with navigating between the next steps for viewing the lectures and quizzes, as well as submissions for the final labs, but overall it flowed pretty well.
