About Cedar Run
Cedar Run is a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of New Jersey’s wildlife and habitats through education, conservation and rehabilitation. Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge sits on 171 wooded acres on the edge of the New Jersey Pinelands. Cedar Run includes the Woodford Nature Center, an outdoor Wildlife Housing Area with nearly 60 native residents, and a Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital. The overall mission of Cedar Run is to serve as a community resource on the importance of protecting and enhancing healthy ecosystems for all. To that end, Cedar Run engages in: ecologically based land management; the operation of a Federally and NJ State licensed hospital facility that cares for more than 7,700 sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife each year; the education of over 22,000 people annually through our various on-site and outreach programs; and serves as an active resource to the greater New Jersey community on all wildlife and habitat related questions and issues.
Position Title: Staff Veterinarian (Full-Time)
Department: Wildlife Rehabilitation
Reports to: Executive Director
Purpose of Position:
The Staff Veterinarian provides medical and surgical care for sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife, and oversees the preventive health and long-term care of Cedar Run’s non-releasable Wildlife Ambassadors. This position works closely with the Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation and Executive Director to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare, medical compliance, and professional collaboration within the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital. The veterinarian plays a key role in advancing Cedar Run’s mission through compassionate care, staff training, and ongoing development of best practices in wildlife medicine and rehabilitation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Engage in positive and effective communication with Cedar Run staff, volunteers, and the general public. This includes in-person, emails, and other communication tools.
This position is expected to be the employee’s top professional priority. While outside employment is permissible, the responsibilities and needs of Cedar Run’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital must take precedence at all times, especially in matters impacting patient care, staff coordination, and emergency response.
Accurately document all patient examinations, treatments, diagnostic findings, and medical decisions in the digital wildlife patient record database in a timely manner, ensuring data integrity and compliance with record-keeping requirements.
Able to work quickly and efficiently in all tasks including admission exams, recheck exams, writing records, and evaluating diagnostic results.
Answer immediate intake staff questions, health checks, and patient assessments; knows when to reach out to other staff with questions.
Be available for emergency situations and to provide timely guidance on urgent medical questions or patient care needs.
Be proficient in clinical skills working with wildlife species, including but not limited to: venipuncture, hematology, parasitology, radiology, anesthesiology, soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, wound and fracture management, drug and fluid administration, and necropsy.
Evaluate and work collaboratively with the licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators on pre-release reconditioning requirements and determine when adult patients are ready for release.
Train, instruct, and supervise pre-clinical and clinical veterinary students working and/or shadowing at Cedar Run.
Demonstrated proficiency in all nursery animal feeding techniques and is familiar with nursery animal husbandry protocols.
Knowledgeable in protocols and procedures regarding: intake, admission, guidelines & policies, standard triage practices including EOA (euthanasia on arrival), and have an understanding of the impact of injuries and disease on post-release survival and prognosis of typical cases
Examination: How to safely examine each species admitted, including large/dangerous species, how to research and find appropriate sedation doses, etc.
Diagnostic interpretation (using knowledge, past cases, and external research)
Treatment (researching new treatments and writing protocols, brings complicated cases for group discussion).
Develop, update, and implement medical protocols and treatment guidelines to ensure standardized, evidence-based care across the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital.
Create and implement biosecurity protocols to protect patient, staff, volunteer, and public health, including disease prevention and containment measures as needed.
Must demonstrate exceptional collaboration and communication skills to effectively partner with volunteer veterinary practices, consulting veterinarians, and allied professionals in support of Cedar Run’s medical care, training, and case management initiatives.
Maintain collaborative relationships with other wildlife rehabilitation centers, governmental agencies, and universities to support knowledge sharing, case consultations, and advancement of wildlife medicine and conservation efforts.
Order and manage inventory of drugs, medical supplies, and equipment to ensure the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital is adequately stocked and operational at all times.
Advance the field of wildlife rehabilitation through research and/or education.
Participate in weekly management and department meetings.
Participate in quarterly Wildlife Rehabilitation Committee meetings.
Other duties as assigned. Evolving position in an evolving department.
Required Qualifications:
A passion for Cedar Run’s mission to protect and preserve New Jersey’s wildlife and habitats through education, conservation, and rehabilitation.
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent required.
Must hold or be eligible to obtain a New Jersey veterinary license within three (3) months of hire.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DEA license for Schedule II-V Substances and oversee the handling and record-keeping of controlled substances.
Enthusiastic personality with a positive outlook and a can-do attitude.
Ability to work with minimal supervision – self-motivated & confident.
Minimum 1–2 years of experience in wildlife, exotic, or zoological medicine.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to mentor and teach others.
Commitment to the mission and values of Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge.
Highly organized and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule that will include weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of native New Jersey wildlife species, rehabilitation medicine, and husbandry.
Experience with wildlife medicine; proficiency in soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery.
Proficiency in medical data entry and familiarity with electronic medical record systems.
Physical Demands:
Use of hands, fingers, tools or controls.
Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch and communicate with others.
Routinely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Exposure to wet surfaces.
Depending on assignment, wearing a face mask for long periods of time.
Exposure to the elements can be expected.
Benefits:
Salary Range: $80,000-$90,000 Commensurate with Experience
Health and Welfare Benefits: Cedar Run complies with all applicable federal and state laws with regard to benefits administration. All regular employees scheduled and generally working at least 32 hours a week are entitled to health insurance and other Cedar Run-sponsored health benefits, when in effect. New qualifying employees will be eligible for coverage immediately.
Simple IRA Retirement Plan: Cedar Run offers a Simple Individual Retirement Plan (IRA) plan benefit to employees. These plans offer a simple way for Cedar Run to contribute to your retirement. An eligible employee is any employee who: (1) has been employed by Cedar Run for at least one year, (2) has earned at least $5,000 or more in the previous year and is anticipated to earn at least $5,000 in the current year. Cedar Run will contribute a match of [pre-tax] funds of up to 3% of wages each year towards each covered employee’s retirement plan accounts.
Holiday Pay: Cedar Run offers 11 paid Holidays for full-time employees.
Sick Time: Full-time employees will be provided 32 hours of sick leave at the start of the benefit year. Employees are eligible to use accrued sick leave on their 120th day of employment.
Paid Time Off: In order to help employees foster a work-life balance, Cedar Run offers paid time off (PTO) and winter holiday leave to full-time employees. PTO may be used for any purpose, including but not limited to vacation, personal matters, and recovery from injury or illness. Full-time employees are provided with 32 hours of PTO at the start of the benefit year. PTO may be used after completion of an employee’s introductory period.
Winter Holiday Leave: In addition to regular PTO, full-time employees are eligible for five (5) paid winter holiday leave days during the time period around Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Vacation Time: Employees will accrue vacation according to the following schedule: 1-2 years: 40 hours; 3-5 years: 80 hours; 6+ years: 120 hours.
Professional Development: Each Cedar Run staff member is encouraged to participate in a continuing education program; in addition, key staff should also be encouraged to keep their knowledge current through continuing education. Each program area has an annual budget for continuing education.
