Position Summary:
Job Title: Clinic Director
Reports to: Executive Director
Compensation: Full-time exempt position with $50-$55k annual salary and benefits.

Job Description
Avian Haven is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of Maine’s injured, sick, and orphaned wild birds. The Clinic Director is responsible for overseeing the intake, medical care and rehabilitation of patients. The Clinic Director directly supervises the Clinic Associate, Rehab Manager in Training, Facilities Manager and Admissions Manager, as well as advising Rehab Assistants, volunteers, and interns. The Clinic Director ensures that the facility, equipment, and supply and material needs of the clinic operations are met and that all local, state, and federal permits and reports are current.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinic:
● Assess and stabilize newly admitted patients, including splinting/wrapping fractures, initial wound management, fluid therapy, medication selection and administration, radiology, parasite identification, basic bloodwork, euthanasia, and identification of cases requiring management or surgery by consulting veterinarian.
● Administer anesthesia for in-house procedures (bandaging, splinting, radiology).
● Compound and administer compound liquid medications as needed.
● Perform recheck examinations of injuries.
● Oversee evaluation of patients for upgrade and for release.
● Coordinate and assist consulting veterinarian with examinations, procedures, and anesthesia.
● Maintain complete and accurate patient records, including ongoing medical care notes, treatment plans, diagnoses, and disposition recommendations. Record as such in patient files.
● Supervise team members in performing specialty procedures, such as bathing oiled birds, lavage procedures to remove foreign material from gastrointestinal tract and imping damaged feathers.
● Responsible for maintenance of clinic equipment.

Rehab:
● Oversee the ongoing rehabilitation care of patients, including medication, fluid administration, food preparation, hand feeding, tubing, cage cleaning, and monitoring of patient progress, in the clinic and flight enclosures.
● Determine and provide species-specific housing, habitat and diets.

Management:
● Promote a positive and inclusive work environment.
● Ensure that all staff, interns and volunteers are following safety and handling protocols to maximize human and bird safety, including proper use of radiology badges by all employees, interns, and volunteers.
● Responsible for inventorying, ordering, and procuring medical and dietary clinic supplies.
● Oversee development and periodic revision of training protocols and training procedures.
● Coordinate and participate in continuing education and permitting, including for staff, as required to stay current in the field of wildlife rehabilitation.
● Oversee the recruitment and training of clinic and rehab staff as well as interns, including the interview hiring process.
● Maintain effective and efficient communication with the Executive Director to address concerns, issues, priorities, and opportunities as they arise. Bring notable topics to the attention of the Executive Director for awareness and/or resolution, to ensure and enhance workflow.
● Contribute to setting priorities in program development and budgeting.
● Assist in creation of messaging and narrative for use in all public communications and fundraising, via website, social media, press, and public outreach.
● Provide guidance and oversight in communications with both onsite and offsite volunteers, including rescue and transport volunteers.
● Supervise patient upgrades to outdoor enclosures and ensure ongoing improvements to facilities adequately support patient needs.
● Determine and provide guidance on release protocols.

Ensure upholding the mission of Avian Haven across all of the above.

Required Qualifications
● Ability to acquire and maintain state and federal wildlife permits.
● Ability to effectively, professionally and respectfully communicate on an individual and group basis with staff, volunteers, interns, and the public.
● Familiarity with wildlife management software.
● Strong work ethic and ability to work both independently and as part of the team.
● Licensed veterinary technician OR a degree in a related wildlife field with significant experience working in a wildlife rehabilitation setting.
● Reliable transportation (working vehicle, valid Maine driver’s license, insurance, etc.)
● Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, RaptorMed/WRMD
● Basic math skills, including ability to calculate medication dosages.
● Ability to prioritize duties, multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
● Working knowledge of native Maine birds.
● Experience capturing, handling, and restraining wild birds.
● Basic veterinary medical knowledge.
● Willingness to be trained in any area necessary.

Physical Demands and Exposure to Environmental Conditions:
● Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 lbs. without assistance
● Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and crouch for prolonged periods of time
● Ability to work in inclement weather such as rain, snow, high heat, humidity, high winds.
● Employees may come in contact with zoonotic diseases, chemicals, radiograph equipment, potentially combative animals, and allergens such as: peanuts, tree nuts, etc.
