Wildlife rehabilitators are on the frontlines of detecting emerging patterns of infectious diseases, as they are the first to encounter sick or injured wild animals. We invite wildlife rehabilitation facilities (large and small) from across the United States to join a national network to enhance surveillance for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1) in mammalian and avian wildlife. The goal of this project is to better understand viral persistence in the environment, while characterizing the current landscape of HPAI in wildlife (specifically those entering rehabilitation facilities for care). This effort will complement existing, but limited wildlife surveillance activities. Participation involves collection and submission of samples for HPAI screening. Blood sample collection is not required. Results are returned to wildlife rehabilitation facility partners in a timely manner, and all necessary permits are obtained. Our team provides all the necessary resources to ensure smooth and efficient participation. This includes: Step-by-step guidelines and protocols Collection materials (e.g., swabs, media tubes, blood collection supplies) Datasheets Barcode labels for samples Shipping materials and prepaid FedEx labels Routine support by email/phone If you are interested in learning more or would like to participate in this project, please complete this brief form (https://forms.gle/ametvDj5uCSTWQiX8) or contact wildlifestudy@tgen.org.
