Reason for entering rehabilitation.:

This is an education permitted eagle. He has not been glove trained. Has only been on display. Due to our being in a transition facility for the next couple of years, we feel it best to relinquish this beautiful bird to somewhere he can be fully appreciated by the public. We received him as an injured first year fledgling. He is partially flighted due to an injury to his right ulna when his nest tree fell. He was WNV positive and initially was diagnosed as blind in his left eye, but regained sight in that eye after about 6 months. Due to being on our Special Possession permits, he does not require being vetted for placement again. If you do not currently have an eagle permit, PLEASE DO NOT reach out until you are in possession of a current , valid permit.

See above. He is over weight, but we are slowly bringing it down.

Can the animal express species-typical behaviors (e.g. eat appropriate whole foods, climb, perch, groom, dig, fly, swim, ambulate normally for species)?:

As stated, partially flighted, can easily move from low perch to high perch that is at 5' over a distance of 10' without problem. Primary foods are is rat, rabbit, with limited Beef heart treats.

Can the animal be handled without negative welfare affects?: yes

This is how the animal currently reacts when a frequent caregiver nears it (e.g. does it modify behavior, show signs of fear, agonism, habituation):

Depends on the caregiver. He likes some, and moves to far end of Mews with others. He prefers not to be handled, likely due to the intense rehabilitation care he had to go through for his wing injury and WNV treatments.

Eight year old male Bald Eagle. Currently a permitted Display Education Ambassador, in need of a new/good home due to circumstances beyond our control (Organization lost of 14 year home unexpectedly).
