Wildlife Rehabilitator

Currently seeking a wildlife rehabilitator for the coming season 2024.

Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre is a registered charity, located on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada. Our centre is dedicated to rescuing and providing emergency care to orphaned, injured and sick wild birds and mammals of all species, including marine mammals. We have an exciting opportunity for a Wildlife Rehabilitator to join our team for the season 2024.

Duties include but are not limited to:
.intake examinations, developing treatment plans, dosing medications and performing diagnostic exams(i.e. radiographs, blood draws, wound care, fecal exams) for all species
.hand-feeding infant patients and perform other basic husbandry techniques, including tube-feeding small mammals and avian species, especially song birds
• prepare specialized diets for patients based on their species, growth stage and individual needs
• transport animals to and from the clinic, on and off island
. participate and supervise rescues on and off island, for all species
• assist with cleaning and sanitation procedures
• maintain the clinic, outbuildings and equipment to a high standard of hygiene and organization
• maintain accurate rehabilitation records and supply inventory lists

The ideal candidate should have some of the following qualifications:
. two years professional experience in wildlife rehabilitation with a combination of mammals, songbirds, and raptors preferred. Minimum of 1 year working in wildlife rehabilitation with avian and or mammal species required.
• previous experience working or volunteering at a veterinary clinic, animal shelter or other animal welfare organization.
.previous experience working with marine mammals, pinnipeds especially, highly desirable.
• previous experience working in a fast-paced environment– ability to multi-task and prioritize work
• ability to work both independently and to take and implement directions well
• fairly fit, ability to lift 40lbs, comfortable on boats and working outdoors
• valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• 18+ years of age
Vehicle for transport and rescues provided. Housing provided. Vehicle provided for your days off. Must be available to work on some weekends and some statutory holidays when required. This is a seasonal position with possibility for more hours for a motivated/qualified candidate.
Starting date: May 1st - Flexible on that date if needed.
