Executive Director

Our mission at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center is to preserve and protect our region’s native wildlife by providing rehabilitation services and education to raise public awareness of the factors that threaten its abundance and diversity. We are one of the only wildlife rehabilitation hospitals on Long Island, and the only hospital to serve the East End.

Our Center takes in over 2,000 injured, orphaned, and sick wild animals every year. We accept all native species of wildlife, from sparrows to deer and everything in between. Our skilled and dedicated staff provide comprehensive medical care and expert husbandry to hundreds of species with the goal of returning these animals to the wild.

Our educational services include public programming, special events, and school programs designed to raise awareness of wildlife concerns and promote peaceful coexistence with our wild neighbors. Our team of educators work with our non-releasable wildlife ambassadors to allow members of the public to appreciate these incredible animals up-close.

The Opportunity

The EAWRC seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking individual to serve as its next Executive Director. You will lead a skilled team of wildlife professionals to continue a tradition of providing high-quality medical care while expanding the Center's programming, public outreach, and fundraising efforts.

Leadership
 Manage and support the Board of Directors; in conjunction with the Board President, prepare monthly meeting agendas; prepare monthly operational update for the Board
 Develop the annual budget
 Assess and make recommendations on current policies and procedures. Ensure all
organizational policies follow relevant laws and regulations
 Oversee the staff and volunteers, fostering an open and collegial environment and providing opportunities for professional development
 Oversee the animal hospital and husbandry protocols; assess protocols for effectiveness and strategic use of resources; ensure hospital staff follow best practices and recommendations laid out in the NWRA’s Minimum Standards guide
 Act as the face of the organization, building a strong public presence and representing the
Wildlife Center in the community

Fundraising/Events
 Working in conjunction with the Director of Development, create an annual fundraising plan and oversee progress towards fundraising goals
 Act as the chief fundraiser for the organization; cultivate relationships with existing donors and steward new donors; expand corporate fundraising opportunities
 Work in conjunction with the Director of Development and board committee to expand grant funding opportunities; assist in grant-writing activities; prepare annual reporting on grant funding
 Assist with executing major fundraising events, including the Summer Gala; assist with
budgeting and forecasting for events
 Oversee annual fundraising mailers, including the Spring and Holiday appeals

Budgeting/Finance
 Monitor monthly expenses, income, and account balances throughout the year. Ensure fiscal responsibility and maintain a balanced budget
 Facilitate the annual audit
 Perform daily accounting tasks via Quickbooks, including entry of donations; bank reconciliations; outgoing expenses; and bank deposits.
 Oversee HR operations, including payroll and benefits

Operational
 Keep up-to-date on maintenance and equipment needs; prioritize repairs and maintenance
 Oversee all mailings, advertising, marketing, etc
 Evaluate third-party vendors, insurance, etc for cost and performance
 Ensure all permits and licenses are up-to-date, including state and federal Rehabilitation and Education permits
 Serve as the primary contact for state and federal agencies and vendors
 Assist with and oversee administrative tasks

Required Qualifications
 Bachelor’s degree
 5+ years of Director-level experience in an environmental or wildlife-related nonprofit
 Strong financial management experience
 Demonstrated fundraising experience
 Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal abilities
 A passion for EAWRC’s mission and the ability to be an inspiring spokesperson in the community
 Ability to work with and around wildlife, including birds, mammals, and reptiles
 Ability to inspire and encourage a dedicated staff; ability to work under pressure

Preferred Qualifications
 Director-level experience at a wildlife rehabilitation hospital or similar facility
 Hands-on experience in wildlife care
 Familiarity with NYDEC rules and regulations
 Experience with managing and cultivating a Board of Directors
 Familiarity with QuickBooks and DonorPerfect or similar databases
