Description
The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) is an internationally recognized 501c(3) nonprofit
organization dedicated to treating and rehabilitating wildlife through state-of-the-art veterinary care, research,
education, and conservation medicine. CROW is one of the nation’s leading rehabilitation facilities for native and
migratory wildlife, caring for over 6,000 patients a year, and representing over 200 species of ill, injured, and
orphaned animals. CROW is unique in that it serves as a teaching hospital with educational opportunities for
college students, veterinary students, veterinary technology students, and veterinarians.
The Staff Veterinarian will:
· Efficiently oversee and manage a wide variety of patients
· Regularly provide supervision, training, and guidance to the Veterinary Interns and students
· Ensure that top quality of care is provided according to the latest evidence-based or scientific information.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Care
• Works on-site for a minimum of 40 hours a week performing and/or supervising medical, surgical, and
rehabilitative care of all wildlife patients. Available as needed for consultation by veterinary interns or
other staff.
• Oversees Veterinary Interns with case workups and procedures and takes primary case responsibility
as needed by case load.
• Performs patient admissions and intake exams as needed.
• Maintains up-to-date and accurate medical records and evaluates / reviews the veterinary intern
medical records.
• Performs emergency duties as necessary or delegates and consults on after-hours emergencies.
• Responsible for helping to set hospital policies (in partnership with Research and Medical Director) and
creating and maintaining policy and procedure manual with regard to patient care.
• Supervises examinations of all ambassador animals twice yearly, and as needed throughout the year to
ensure their continued health.
• Ensures there is hospital staff appraisal of all VEC animals and their cages at least once weekly and
discusses with caretakers any issues or problems with the animals.
Education
• Works with volunteers, students, interns and staff to provide instruction and oversight in the hospital.
• Conducts orientation, mid-point evaluations, and exit interviews for students, interns, and staff and
completes relevant paperwork in conjunction with the Hospital Training Coordinator and/or Office
Manager.
• Recruits and selects veterinary interns in conjunction with the Research and Medical Director either
through or outside VIRMP.
• Presents educational lectures to students/interns at least once weekly
• Presents educational lectures periodically to the public either in the VEC, or off campus to the
community as needed.
Here
Administration
• Supervises interns, students, volunteers, and staff.
• Reports pertinent hospital developments to the Research and Medical Director, Executive Director, or
Board as may be deemed necessary.
• Implements, as required, emergency patient evacuation protocols in the event of natural or other
disasters.
• Inventories controlled substances quarterly.
• In conjunction with the Research and Medical Director, staffs the hospital within budget, manages
hospital budget, and ensures all employees maintain appropriate credentials / licensing.
• Develop, improve, and implement patient protocols.
• Communicates with local organizations / biologists regarding animal surveillance as needed
• Ensures appropriate federal and state permitting is maintained for the organization
• Supports creation and maintenance of overall CROW hospital workplace culture, creating a safe,
supportive, and pleasant work environment for staff and volunteers.
Research
• Supports Research and Medical Director in conducting research as requested.
• Assists as needed to support Research and Medical Director and Development Director in seeking
funding for CROW hospital.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Must hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent
• Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Florida or ability to become licensed within 30 days
• DEA license within 30 days of Florida licensure.
• At least 2 years of fulltime experience with wildlife, zoological, or avian medicine
• ACZM board certification eligibility or desire to become ACZM specialized preferred
• Updated tetanus and rabies vaccination
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record
• Able to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends and holidays
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, kneel, and sit / stand for prolonged periods of time.
• Experience with the rehabilitation of sea turtles is ideal
