History: Established in 1977, Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) receives over 10,000 wild animals
per year for rehabilitation and release as well as providing permanent sanctuary for more than 600
resident non-releasable indigenous wildlife, non-native wildlife (large mammals, primates, reptiles and
birds) and farmed animals. Wildlife Rescue is located on 212 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country,
near Austin and San Antonio.
Description: This position works very closely with the Lead Veterinarian, Associate Veterinarian and the
Rehabilitation Manager to ensure excellent care for all animals at Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation. The
Veterinary Technician will be a member of the Veterinary Staff and participate in medical care of both
hospitalized wildlife and permanent resident animals in sanctuary. The current Veterinary Staff includes
a full-time Veterinarian, a full-time Associate Veterinarian and Veterinarian Technician Apprentices.
Primary Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary areas of responsibility are tending to the medical needs of the animals, ensuring protocols are
current and accurate, including, but not limited to, those described below:
• Perform opening and closing procedures of Veterinary Treatment room and Surgery Suite on daily
basis. Restock supplies and perform daily cleaning of Vet Rooms. Maintenance, repair and
calibration of all Veterinary Equipment.
• Triage wildlife hospital patients and assist veterinarian with examinations and treatment plans for
each individual. Record all medical information in patient file, fill out medication schedules as dictated
by vet and administer all necessary medications and treatments as prescribed.
• Prepare for and assist with surgeries and monitor patients’ anesthesia during procedures. Recover
patients post-op. Clean and autoclave surgical packs.
• Collect, prepare and ship laboratory samples to a variety of labs. Perform in-house diagnostics as
prescribed by veterinarian including: x-rays, blood work, chemistry panels and fecal parasite analysis.
• Gain confidence in skills such as IV catheter placement, wing wraps, and dental cleanings.
• Work with animal care staff to ensure proper patient identification, proper nutritional support and
habitat setup for each patient.
• Maintain written documentation of services performed and copies provided to WRR for the animals
files.
• Maintain proper controlled substance records as required by the DEA. Compound pharmaceuticals,
fill prescriptions and distribute medications as prescribed by Veterinarian.
• Maintain medical paperwork, tags and clips.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

• Education: An associate's degree is required, Veterinarian Technician certification required.
• Experience: 1-2 years’ experience working with native wildlife preferred.
• Attendance: Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance.
• Vaccinations: Meningitis, Tetanus and rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are required. Negative TB
test required.
• Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via oral or written means. Ability to
document daily observations reports, medical logs etc.
• Composure: Ability to remain calm and maintain self-control in the midst of difficult circumstances
and emergencies. Ability to respond in a professional manner in all situations and have a high level
of integrity.
• Organization: Ability to keep various on-going projects organized. Requires good time management
practices and the ability to meet multiple deadlines.
• Technical: Working knowledge of animal husbandry and rehabilitation.
• Computer: Working knowledge MS Office; Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Compensation:
Salary is $16.00 hourly contingent on certification and experience, plus benefits (WRR will pay 55% of
your monthly insurance premium). Discounted onsite housing is available. Full-time employees will
receive 18 days of PTO and seven paid holidays per year. Candidates selected for interview will be
