Staff Veterinarian
PURPOSE:
• Responsible for the management of NMWC’s wildlife hospital and rehabilitation operations.
• Through the application of current best practices ensure the highest attainable medical care, treatment and rehabilitation outcomes for wildlife patients.
• Provide veterinary care for NMWC Ambassador Animals.
• Assist wildlife rehabilitation staff in the supervision and training of interns and volunteers.
• Direct initiatives and practices that place NMWC as a national leader in wildlife medical care and rehabilitation.
CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, exempt
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
SUPERVISES: Serves as the direct supervisor to Wildlife Rehabilitators, interns, and volunteers.
WORK HOURS: Work hours are seasonally variable, typically 5 days/40 hours per week. Some nights, weekend, and holiday work hours required. Some in-state and out-of-state travel required.
SALARY Range: $80,000 - $90,000

POSITION SUMMARY
The Staff Veterinarian serves in an integral role advancing New Mexico Wildlife Center’s mission. That role includes serving on NMWC Leadership Team, collaborating with other staff and direct management of the NMWC hospital. The position is responsible for the health and well-being of the animals in our care, including 800-1000 wildlife patients annually representing over 130 species and 25 resident Ambassador Animals. You will provide medical and surgical treatment to sick or injured animals, perform routine exams and preventative care, and contribute to the development of long-term health plans. The Staff Veterinarian is also responsible for maintaining accurate medical records, permits and certifications. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal welfare and a strong desire to learn and grow in their career. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with teaching and supervision of interns, veterinary students, and volunteer veterinarians.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Animals and Care
• Ensure animal medical care needs are met and treatments are being properly administered.
• Maintain the highest quality of care standards, refine species protocols, and oversee medical treatment plans.
• Collaborate with staff to develop and carry out treatment plans and determine final disposition of animals undergoing care.
• Keep accurate and detailed animal health records and documentation of daily animal care; input and maintain accurate patient medical records in WRMD and EMRs for Ambassador Animals.
• Coordinate veterinary and diagnostic procedures.
• Ensure that animals are being handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety and that staff/interns/volunteers are trained in and follow safety procedures.
• Follow current guidelines regarding biosecurity for infectious disease and public health.
Teamwork
• Keep Executive Director informed of animal intakes, in-house patients and their status, animal care needs, quality of animal care, and hospital needs.
• Assists with teaching and supervision of interns, veterinary students and volunteers.
• Support Education staff as necessary in medical treatments for Ambassador Animals including annual exams and Quality of Life assessments.
Administration
• The position is responsible for the overall administration of the hospital's operation.
• As a member of the Leadership Team the Staff Veterinarian works to advance the Center’s mission and achieve established strategic goals and objectives.
• Maintain professional contact with state veterinarians, wildlife agencies, and other wildlife rehabilitation providers.
• Ensure hospital inventory, ordering supplies as needed and within hospital budget.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A passion for NMWC’s mission.
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree.
• Pre-exposure rabies vaccination series. Proof of vaccination or adequate titer will be required.
• Must be able to lift/move/carry up to 50 pounds safely.
• Must be legally entitled to work in the USA.
• Must be able to humanely perform euthanasia on a regular and routine basis as well as personally and professionally handle the emotional aspects of euthanasia.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with the public, law enforcement, regulatory agencies, veterinarians, and others.
• Excellent organizational, detail, planning and time management skills.
• Self-motivated, able to work independently with limited supervision and as a member of a team.
• Proactive approach in resolving problems with a positive outlook and can-do attitude.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and database management including WRMD.
• Skills related to training, coaching, and mentoring personnel are highly desirable.
• Must be able to work quickly, efficiently, and calmly under stressful conditions.
Professional Requirements, Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
• Current valid New Mexico Veterinary Medical License, or ability to obtain one.
• National license to practice veterinary medicine in the United States (NAVLE)
• Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license for controlled substances, or ability to obtain one.
• Valid New Mexico driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
• Minimum 1-year experience in wildlife rehabilitation medicine. Strong preference will be given to those with experience in avian medicine and surgery.
