Job Title: Duck Watch Lead
Location: District of Columbia
Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Duck Watch Lead, responsible for protecting the safety and well-being of duck and goose families throughout the District of Columbia. In this role, you will respond to calls for assistance involving ducks and ducklings or geese and goslings coordinating their rescue and transportation to local bodies of water and rehabilitation centers as necessary. This is a seasonal position (April through July 2025).

Key Responsibilities:
• Respond promptly to calls regarding ducks or geese in distress within the District of Columbia.
• Safely escort or capture and transport ducks and ducklings/geese and goslings to local bodies of water.
• Transport injured or orphaned ducks and ducklings/geese and goslings to City Wildlife, or other rehabilitation centers outside the District.
• Conduct weekly monitoring shifts at designated locations, including the Capitol Reflecting Pool (CRP) and Constitution Gardens/Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool (COGA/LMRP).
• Train and supervise volunteers assigned to CRP and COGA/LMRP Duck Watch duties, providing ongoing support and guidance throughout the season.
• Maintain an active database of all duck- or goose-related calls received by City Wildlife, ensuring accurate documentation and follow-up.
Requirements:
• Passion for wildlife conservation and animal welfare
• Access to a car and ability to drive, including proficiency in parallel parking
• Ability to handle and transport waterfowl safely and compassionately
• Strong interpersonal skills to engage with members of the public and effectively train volunteers
• Physical ability to perform duties such as lifting and carrying a cage full of ducklings or goslings and walking or standing for extended periods
• Willingness to work in inclement weather, e.g., rain or excessive heat
• Knowledge of local wildlife laws and regulations pertaining to waterfowl is a plus
Work Schedule:
• Full time, Tuesday through Saturday
• Occasional irregular hours to attend trainings or respond to emergencies
