SUMMARY: The Vermont Institute of Natural Science in Quechee, Vermont, is currently seeking a strong candidate to fill the position of Seasonal Avian Rehabilitator. The Seasonal Avian Rehabilitator works closely with the permanent animal care staff. The Seasonal Avian Rehabilitator understands and partakes in all aspects of animal care both for permanent resident animals at VINS and patients in the Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation.
The Seasonal Avian Rehabilitator is skilled in performing physical examinations on birds, diagnosing injuries, administering medications and fluids to birds, feeding, cleaning and maintaining the animal enclosures; observing and reporting unusual changes in behavior to supervisors; assisting with rehabilitation procedures; keeping detailed records for internal and state purposes; and educating the general public on basic wildlife issues.
The Seasonal Avian Rehabilitator understands the goals of VINS, its mission, and participates actively in the VINS community. The Seasonal Avian Rehabilitator also assumes an education and public relations role at VINS and should be comfortable in presenting details and concepts to the public.
Prerequisites
• At least one season of wildlife rehabilitation experience, preferably avian wildlife.
• At least one season of caring for and hand-feeding baby songbirds and other birds.
• A Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology or related field.
• Works well with the general public.
• Ability to work independently and is a self-starter.
• Strong team relations.
• Organized and handles multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Must be flexible with schedule; weekends, early mornings, evenings and some holidays are expected.
Candidate should possess the skill sets needed to perform the responsibilities listed below:
• Performs avian wildlife rehabilitation care, including initial triage and assessment, wound care management, fracture immobilization, dosing and administering medications and fluids as needed.
• Performs euthanasia as necessary along humane euthanasia guidelines.
• Helps to train and coordinate interns and volunteers.
• Helps in facility and enclosure maintenance and cleaning.
• Performs husbandry care for permanent resident birds and reptiles.
• Works collaboratively with the VINS Nature Center Education team in support of the outreach and onsite programs.
• Fields phone calls from the public regarding injured wildlife and other wildlife questions.
• Keeps detailed records on animal care.

Compensation
Hourly wage of $17.50/hour paid bi-weekly.
