Full-time Avian Rehabilitator

SUMMARY: The Vermont Institute of Natural Science in Quechee, Vermont, is currently seeking a strong candidate to fill the full time position of Avian Rehabilitator. The Avian Rehabilitator partakes in all aspects of animal care both for permanent resident animals at VINS and patients in the Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation and Ambassador Care.

The primary job of the Avian Rehabilitator will be ensuring the day-to-day tasks are completed on a timely basis. This includes upkeep on general cleanliness of the building and enclosures. Special projects will be assigned that will require accuracy and timely deadlines. The Avian Rehabilitator assists in training and overseeing the work performed by interns and volunteers related to the care of the wild animals entrusted to VINS. The Avian Rehabilitator is skilled in performing physical examinations on birds, diagnosing injuries, administering medications and fluids to birds, feeding, cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures; observing and reporting unusual changes in behavior to supervisors; assisting with rehabilitation procedures; keeping detailed records for internal and state purposes; and educating the general public on basic wildlife issues. All wildlife staff are involved in communication with the public through phone calls, intakes, and informal interactions with guests.

The primary goal and priority is always the care of all animals, as a collective effort.

Prerequisites
• At least three years of avian rehabilitation experience.
• Minimum one season experience feeding and evaluating a variety of baby birds (more specifically songbirds).
• Proven leadership and supervisory skills.
• A Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology or related field and/or Certified Veterinary Technician.
• Works well with the public.
• Strong team relations.
• Organized and handles multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Ability to work under pressure or high stress situations.
• Ability to work at efficient pace necessary for an animal hospital setting.
• Proficient in Word, Excel and detailed record keeping.
• Strong communicator.

Candidate should possess the skill sets needed to perform the responsibilities listed below:
• Performs avian wildlife rehabilitation care, including initial triage and assessment, wound care management, fracture immobilization, dosing and administering medications and fluids as needed, capable of designing and implementing a clear treatment plan.
• Has an understanding or willingness to learn medical procedures using anesthesia.
• Aides in training and supervising multiple interns, seasonal staff, and volunteers on a daily basis.
• Performs husbandry care for the permanent resident animals (Avian ambassadors and reptile).
• Assists in accurate inventory in ordering supplies and food for the care of animals.
• Manages maintenance projects related to the department. This includes: enclosure maintenance, proper cleaning and disinfecting techniques to lessen the spread of disease, and any projects related to the general upkeep of enclosures and building functionality.
• Works collaboratively with the VINS Wildlife Ambassador Programs team in support of VINS’ outreach and onsite programs.

Compensation

$18/hr + benefits (health insurance, dental, eye)
