off-site education animal
captive reared
12 months old
This Cooper’s Hawk came in one month ago after being found as a nestling and illegally kept for a year by a member of the public. We attempted to rewild him, but it quickly became clear that he is imprinted on humans and therefore non-releasable.

The hawk is currently in training using non-coercive, choice-based methods. When you enter the enclosure, the bird initially jumps off its perch and paces back and forth on its shelf for a few moments, but then becomes engaged and ready to work. It will station to a perch and hop to the glove on its own terms. Eats well off the glove. We've only been training for about 10 days, but he is picking things up quickly and beginning to trust.
Very habituated. Will allow you to look into enclosure and will stay on perch with foot up, rouse, or will just watch. Will occasionally food beg in the afternoon.

We would like him to go to a facility that can work with him daily using positive choice-based methods. He is fully flighted and would thrive in an environment where he gets daily engagement, training and could potentially free-fly. However, we think with the right training he will be a great glove bird as well.
